Welcome to the November 1, 2026 edition of Money Explored—the essential Sunday briefing to stay ahead in fintech.

The jobs that used to sit inside a bank are moving to new hands. A crypto firm now guards its own reserves, stablecoin issuers can stop stolen money in minutes, and AI agents are getting the keys to checkout.

Three signals. One direction: holding, stopping and spending money now happen outside the old guard.

❝

THIS WEEK:

  • Ripple's trust bank: A stablecoin issuer now holds its own reserves under a federal bank charter.

  • Binance's $6.3bn hack: Stablecoin issuers froze about $3bn of the stolen money within a day.

  • Shopify's agent checkout: Any AI agent can now search, fill a cart and pay with Shop Pay.

Plus: Europe starts swapping iDEAL for Wero, a big Canadian bank locks AI agents out, and Guidewire pays $1.7bn for AI underwriting.

This edition is published in partnership with HubSpot for Startups. See how founders are finding the weak spots in how they sell, with a free audit and a 90-day plan to fix them, below.

🌎 Major Stories

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, the US regulator that charters national banks, gave Ripple final approval for a national trust bank on 26 October. The bank will hold the reserves behind RLUSD, Ripple's dollar stablecoin, and act as trustee for its holders. It can also offer custody of digital assets. RLUSD itself is still issued by Ripple's New York trust company. In the same week, BNY added RLUSD to its custody platform, Robinhood said it will use RLUSD to settle with institutions, and Coinbase listed it across its apps.

Strategic Takeaway: Ripple now sits inside the banking system it was built to work around. The OCC has approved or conditionally approved more than 20 trust charters since January 2025, over a dozen for crypto firms, according to American Banker. Galaxy Digital applied for its own three days later. A bank-industry lawsuit is still testing what these charters allow, so the line is not settled. For founders: a federal trust charter is becoming the entry ticket for stablecoin work, so ask whether your custody and reserve partners hold one or plan to.

Hackers took about $6.3bn from Binance on 29 October, the largest crypto theft on record, by Binance's own estimate. Binance blamed a compromised engineer's laptop. Circle froze about $823m of the stolen USDC within minutes, and later said the total was more than $1.1bn. Tether also blocked the attacker's wallet. Binance says about $3bn of the stolen funds had been frozen by Friday.

Strategic Takeaway: Stablecoins can be stopped. Bitcoin and ether cannot, and about $2.4bn in those coins was still out of reach on Thursday night, according to TRM Labs. The GENIUS Act, the new US stablecoin law, only obliges issuers to act on final court or agency orders, and it takes effect in January 2027. Circle quietly widened its own policy in May to freeze on urgent police requests before a court rules. For operators: if you hold stablecoins, ask who can freeze them, how fast, and at whose request.

Shopify's Fall '26 Edition, released on 28 October, gives any AI agent or app one connection to its catalog, cart, checkout and Shop Pay. A new skill lets an agent act as a personal shopper and pay with Shop Pay. Every Shopify storefront now carries tools that let browser agents fill a cart and check out once the buyer approves. A new Universal Checkout lets partners sell goods from many brands in one basket.

Strategic Takeaway: Banks are shutting AI agents out of accounts. Shopify is inviting them in at the till. That moves the fight over agent payments to checkout, where the merchant platform writes the rules. Shop Pay, Shopify's own wallet, sits in the middle of every agent purchase. For builders: if your product moves money for an agent, Shopify's checkout is now a place to plug in, and its terms will shape yours.
